What is ARO PortaStack™?

ARO PortaStack™ is a modular espresso puck prep system of tools, each built around a common magnetic docking interface.

Every PortaStack tool is designed to stack, center, and align automatically, creating a clean, repeatable workflow from dosing through tamping.

Rather than treating each step independently, PortaStack treats puck preparation as a single, integrated process. Consistent geometry, coordinated magnetic interfaces, and shared material finishes ensure each tool functions as part of a cohesive system, both mechanically and visually.

  • Common magnetic docking interface across all tools
  • Modular by design. Integrates into existing workflows
  • Coordinated materials and finishes for a unified system
  • Designed for consistency, cleanliness, and efficiency

The PortaStack Workflow

ARO PortaFunnel™ – PortaStack Edition

It starts with a foundation.

Attach the ARO PortaFunnel to your portafilter. It serves as the foundation for the PortaStack system and provides the magnetic docking interface for stacking compatible tools.

ARO Shaker™ – PortaStack Edition

Shake, then dose.

Grind directly into the ARO Shaker, then shake to break up clumps and equalize density. Stack the Shaker onto the PortaFunnel and release the grounds cleanly into the basket.

ARO Orbit PRO™ – PortaStack Edition

Stir to distribute.

Distribute the grounds using either the ARO Orbit PRO for mechanized distribution or the ARO® Manual WDT v2 for hands-on control. Level the coffee bed to prepare for an even, consistent tamp.

ARO Auto-Level Tamper™

Finish with a level tamp.

Tamp the puck to complete preparation. Compress the handle for a straight, auto-leveled tamp while preserving tactile feedback as the coffee compacts beneath your hand.

Why PortaStack Works.

PortaStack is built as a unified puck prep system, not a collection of separate tools. Arc magnets, a steel docking ring, and intentional interfaces establish a shared alignment interface that carries through every step of the workflow.

Because each tool docks to the same interface, every step begins centered and stable, reducing variability and keeping the workflow clean from dose to tamp.

ARO PortaStand™ | Adjustable Puck-Prep Station

A stable platform for puck prep.

Consistent puck prep depends on stable support at the counter. The ARO PortaStand™ provides a level, hands-free platform that adapts to different portafilter shapes, sizes, and handle geometries, keeping the workflow stable from dosing through tamping.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

What portafilters is PortaStack compatible with?

PortaStack tools are designed to work with standard 58mm and 54mm (Breville/Sage) espresso portafilters and baskets.

Compatibility starts with the PortaFunnel, and depends on basket diameter, not machine brand.

Magnetic holding strength depends on how strongly your basket attracts magnets. Non-magnetic baskets will have reduced holding force and may require two-handed use.

View the PortaFunnel product listing for detailed compatibility information. All other PortaStack tools must match the size of your PortaFunnel.

Do I need the full system to use PortaStack?

No. PortaStack is modular by design. Individual tools can be used on their own or combined into a complete workflow, and most tools can be used directly on the basket without the PortaFunnel.

Always review the compatibility section of each product listing to ensure proper fit for your setup.

What’s the difference between Orbit PRO and Manual WDT bundles?

Orbit PRO uses a mechanized, spirographic motion for fast, repeatable distribution. The Manual WDT offers hands-on control with adjustable pin patterns and was included as an option to provide a more accessible, lower-cost bundle without compromising workflow quality.

Both integrate into the same PortaStack workflow and deliver consistent, effective distribution.

Do I need the Shaker?

The Shaker is optional, but recommended. It helps break up clumps and create more uniform density before distribution, reducing the amount of correction needed later in the workflow.

Do I need a portafilter stand?

It is highly recommended. A stable platform is essential for consistent puck prep. The ARO PortaStand™ is designed to support nearly all portafilters and provides hands-free stability during dosing, distribution, and tamping.

Are the magnets strong enough to hold the tools securely?

Yes. PortaStack uses neodymium arc magnets for secure docking with easy release. The connection between the funnel and compatible tools is intentional and controlled.

Magnetic holding strength to the basket depends on the magnetic properties of the basket itself. If the basket does not attract magnets, holding force will be significantly reduced. In that case, two hands may be required during use.

Can I adjust the number of magnets?

No. Magnet count and placement are intentionally fixed for each tool.

Do not attempt to remove the magnets. Reinstalling them correctly is difficult, and improper reassembly can affect performance.

What is PortaStack made of?

PortaStack tools are constructed from a combination of anodized aluminum, steel, silicone, neodymium magnets, and premium engineering polymers. Each material is selected for durability and consistent performance throughout the puck prep workflow.

How do I clean PortaStack tools?

Wipe clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Silicone components can be removed and hand washed. Tools are not dishwasher safe.
