Product Description
The ARO Headspace Setter™ is a precision tool engineered to help you calibrate and maintain consistent espresso headspace based on your specific espresso machine. Instead of dialing in purely by dose weight, the Headspace Setter lets you physically set headspace by volume, ensuring the puck sits at the right distance from the shower screen.
Espresso baskets are rated for a range of doses, but what really matters is headspace, the distance between the puck and the shower screen. The ARO Headspace Setter is calibrated once to your espresso machine, then used during dial-in to trim excess grounds to a fixed volume. That calibrated volume is then weighed, converting your ideal headspace into a repeatable dose in grams for that specific coffee and grind size. Once established, you can dose directly by weight, knowing that the number of grams of beans you are using reliably produces your target headspace.
Key Features
- Quick and Easy Headspace Calibration: Quickly determine the ideal headspace for your specific espresso machine using the included 2mm calibration coin. Once set, this reference remains valid across all your baskets.
- Repeatable Volume-Based Dial-In: When dialing in a new bean or grind size, quickly trim the puck to a fixed height to determine the ideal volume first, then translate that volume into a repeatable dose weight.
- Easily Readable Reference Markings: White markings on the center shaft indicate headspace in 1mm increments. Visually confirm your calibrated setting at a glance and adjust intentionally when experimenting with different headspace targets.
- Magnetic Basket Attachment: Three powerful neodymium rare-earth magnets securely attach the Headspace Setter to the basket lip, keeping the tool centered and stable during calibration and trimming. The magnetic connection allows quick placement and removal while ensuring consistent alignment every time.
- Self-Centering Shaft and Blade Assembly: A metal bushing houses the central shaft, ensuring minimal play and a perfectly level blade when trimming the puck. Lock nuts secure your calibration setting while their taper interfaces with the central bushing to self-center the shaft, eliminating wobble and slop. Engineered for extreme repeatability.
- Simple and Efficient Design and Construction: A straightforward mechanical design and lightweight, mostly plastic construction keep weight, cost, and complexity low while remaining easy to use. Fewer parts mean faster setup, easier maintenance, and long-term reliability without sacrificing precision.
- Compatible with Puck Screens: Puck screen thickness is easily accounted for during calibration. Simply add the thickness of your puck screen to your target headspace to provide the appropriate additional clearance.
Why Headspace Matters
Headspace is the distance between the top of the coffee puck and the shower screen. It directly affects how water contacts and saturates the puck during extraction.
Too little headspace increases the risk of puck contact with the shower screen as it absorbs water and swells. This leads to uneven expansion, puck cracking, and channeling.
Too much headspace allows water to pool above the puck before pressure builds, leading to “soupy puck syndrome,” uneven flow, and inconsistent extraction. Maintaining consistent headspace improves shot-to-shot repeatability and reduces one more source of variability when dialing in espresso.
The ARO Headspace Setter helps you find the correct puck height for your machine, then translates that height into a repeatable dose in grams of coffee. From there, dosing becomes simple and predictable.
Calibration Instructions
This one-time calibration process helps you find the ideal puck height for your espresso machine and lock it in as a reference. Calibration only needs to be performed once per machine setup.
Determine Ideal Headspace: A common baseline is 2mm of headspace, which allows room for puck expansion without excessive water pooling.
- Dose slightly above your normal amount and tamp as usual.
- Place the included 2mm thick coin on top of the puck.
- Lock the portafilter into the machine, then remove it.
- Inspect the puck:
- Deep indentation → decrease dose
- No mark → increase dose
- Faint imprint → ideal headspace achieved
If using a puck screen, add its thickness to your target headspace. For example, a 1mm thick puck screen typically pairs well with ~3mm total headspace.
Calibrate the Tool: Once your ideal headspace has been established, use the Headspace Setter to measure and lock in that setting.
- Loosen the lock nuts to allow the blade height to be adjusted.
- Place the Headspace Setter on the basket and lower the blade until it just contacts the puck. Tighten the lock nuts to secure the setting.
- Note the number of graduations visible on the shaft. Each graduation corresponds to 1mm. This is your calibrated headspace for that specific espresso machine.
Usage Instructions
Use the calibrated Headspace Setter to dial in a new coffee by volume, then convert it into a repeatable dose in grams.
Dialing In New Beans:
- Zero your scale with an empty portafilter.
- Overdose slightly, perform puck prep, and tamp.
- Place the calibrated Headspace Setter on the basket and trim excess grounds.
- Weigh the portafilter. This is your target dose for that coffee and grind size.
Once the dose in grams is established, you can dose directly by weight without using the tool again. Revisit the Headspace Setter only when changing beans significantly, altering grind size, switching machines, or adjusting headspace intentionally.
Compatibility
The ARO Headspace Setter is available in multiple sizes and is compatible with nearly all standard espresso baskets. See the compatibility guide below. If your machine or basket is not listed, contact us and we’ll help confirm fit.

What’s in the Box?

Care and Maintenance
Wipe clean after use to remove loose grounds. No disassembly required for routine cleaning.
Do not place in a dishwasher. Clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth only.
Other Useful Info
- Headspace markings are in 1 mm increments. Repeatability is dependent on consistent tamping and puck preparation.
- Headspace only needs to be recalibrated when changing machines, significantly changing grind size, or intentionally adjusting headspace.
